For the December 2015 issue of (614) Magazine, we featured a story that wrapped up the year in Columbus with “100 of the greatest, weirdest, worst, funniest, and most important stories of 2015.” Because it had 100 stories, the “Keepin’ it 100” emoji (seen above on the red opening page in case you have no idea what I’m talking about) and emojis in general were used to create an overarching theme. As I was designing, I went through my phone and searched for as many appropriate emojis to include with each story. This would end up being one of the most difficult articles I ever laid out, because it was several spreads and composed of small blurbs. With more free-flowing stories, it’s much easier to “rough in” the story and get an idea of how much space you will need. Working in the tiny emojis for each story also added another layer of difficulty. That said, I ultimately made it work within the space I was given for the story, and was quite happy with the final product.
